Q. What's the process to start with the Academy?
A. If you already know exactly what you're looking for, you may
wish to sign up
Here.
However, it's likely you have a few questions about the topic
you're learning, the tutor you'll be assigned, where you'll
meet, and how much time might be required. In that case, give us
a call at 800.643.8019 or 212.290.0400. Your free phone
consultation will answer any questions you may have as well us
give us a good idea of what you're looking for and how we can
serve you best.
Once we determine the logistics of meeting your tutor, the next
step depends on whether you plan to be a long or short-term
student with us. For our long-term students, we conduct formal
evaluations before and during your first meeting with your
tutor; for shorter-term arrangements such as in emergency
preparation for an exam that is coming up in a few days or help
with a homework assignment, etc…, we find it's a better use of
time for you to share with us tests and other class materials
that we can review and use to devise a plan.
In your first session with Mathematics Academy, you and your
tutor will complete a variety of exercises to help him or her
evaluate your current grasp of the material, learning style, and
the best way for the two of you to work together. In subsequent
sessions, the student and the teacher work together to advance
the student’s understanding and application of the subject
matter.
For students in high school, the tutor will provide periodic,
written progress reports to the student’s parent or guardian.
Q. What are the qualifications of your tutors?
All our tutors have degrees in their subject areas and extensive
experience in teaching or tutoring their respective subjects.
These are people that love teaching math and imparting their
knowledge of the subject. Many tutoring companies employ tutors
based on having taken one or few courses in a particular field.
At the Math Academy, this is not permitted. All our tutors have
degrees in the subject areas that they teach. Most of our tutors
hold masters degrees in their fields. Some also have PhDs or are
working towards obtaining the advanced degree.
Q. Are your services guaranteed?
A. Oftentimes we can guarantee that you will see an improvement in test scores after at least six hours of work with us. If one of the purposes of your study is to improve standardized test scores, and you can provide an old score, we are happy to guarantee that your score will improve after working with us. In some cases we are able to offer a guarantee of improvement in other types of test scores as well. This is something we can discuss in your initial complementary phone conversation.
Q. How come Math Academy's rates are much more affordable than competing companies'?
A. We are a small company with a conscience. Our business is the
pursuit of knowledge and providing a deeper, more significant
learning experience than most students find in a traditional
Western classroom. It's our top priority to enable the students
we work with by offering accessible services so we strive to
fees as low as possible. We bring student and teacher together
in a beneficial exchange of knowledge and ideas at flat and
extremely competitive rates.
Q. How does online tutoring work?
A. We are extremely flexible in meeting our students at times and places that are convenient for them, because we believe there's an enormous value in one-on-one, in-person tutoring. We'll meet you at home, in your dorm, at your school, in our offices, or at another location that’s convenient for you. However, meeting in person doesn't always work for all of our students, so we offer online tutoring for those who want to benefit from direct access to our knowledge base via the internet. We utilize a commercial web tutoring program that enables student and teacher to converse by voice, video, text, drawing, and graphing, and allows them to examine materials together.
Q. If the focus is on one-on-one tutoring, why do you offer group sessions?
A. It's our first priority to make individualized tutoring accessible to as many students as possible. But we understand that students are usually on tight budgets. For this reason, we tutor small groups of students who are studying the same topic at a reduced rate per person. Our tutors are trained to preserve, as best as possible, mentor-mentee relationships with each student within a small group setting. For groups of three or more, the rate is $30 per person for each 60-minute session or $35 per person for standardized test preparation.
Q. I am not enrolled in high school, college, or graduate school, but I want
to learn. Can Math Academy customize a program
for me?
A. We certainly can. We offer customized lesson plans, based on
the needs and current level of anyone interested in math or
science pursuits. We help fill knowledge gaps to enrich our
students intellectually and professionally in any of the
subjects we offer.
Q. Does Math Academy offer any other services besides lessons
and tutoring?
A. Yes, we do. We run two ongoing math clubs; one at the high
school level and another for college level students. We’ve
created an informal setting for anyone interested to learn and
discuss specific or general areas of math and science. We set
the topic ahead of time and are open to suggestions of your
interests. Topics range from problem solving techniques /
strategies, delving into specific topics, and overviews of the
history and philosophy of mathematics.
We also occasionally run complete math courses for those who are
interested or are in need of improvement in a certain area of
math when there is interest. These classes may also be used
towards preparation for your exams. Your school may even give
you credit for taking the course. Please contact us directly to
be placed on the emailing list for upcoming classes.
